Exploring Australia & The Huon Valley

November 15, 2020 //  by Great Vacations

Exploring Australia & The Huon Valley
Note: Please remember to call ahead to any destination you plan on visiting to ensure hours of operation and other regulations.

Australia is one of those fascinating destinations so varied, you never take the same vacation twice. The Huon Valley is just a half-hour from Hobart, the capital of Australia’s island of Tasmania, and can’t be properly experienced in a mere day trip.

The valley itself is a myriad of wonders, but it’s the incredible foods of the region that make the Huon Valley a place locals drive to just to have lunch. But just having a meal won’t do this location justice. Because, while there’s freshly made apple cider, sushi, and to-die-for apple pie, the incredible natural beauty and adventure awaiting in the Huon Valley beg discovery.

The valley’s many beaches, hot springs, and caves are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The Huon Valley is the entryway to all the south’s forests and the awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness Walks. While hiking is a popular way to explore the valley, you can also opt for boating, hang gliding, walking, or driving. And of course, if you get hungry along the way, local farmers set up stalls along these roads to offer their fresh products. If all you have is a day – perfect. But, once you arrive, you’ll see the Huon Valley is worthy of so much more than just a passing day. Four or five days in this beautiful location will give you so much more of an experience.

The small town feel of Cygnet is just an hour north of Southport. This small hamlet is sandwiched between the Huon River and the beautiful D’Entrecasteaux River channel.  Cygnet is the perfect basecamp for a Huon Valley tour. The Cygnet Retreat is a nice, central spot to hang your hat while you spend a couple days exploring. There are craft shops, art galleries, and a living history museum.

Cygnet is a region full of fruit growers, with apple and cherry orchards abounding – but for the best real foodie experience, visit the Fat Pig Farm. On the farm’s 70 acres, every Friday is a feast night where you get to try local plates and tour the farm in between courses.

There’s truly no way to see all the Huon Valley offers in just a one-day visit. What’s on your list to do first?
