Great Vacations Reviews Luxe Destinations Far from the Crowds

When it comes to destinations that likely top your travel bucket list, “must-see” and “popular” doesn’t always mean “worthwhile” – especially if you run the risk of running into mobs of tourists wielding their cellphone cameras. Now, of course, there’s sites that truly are must-see, especially if you’ve never been to a particular city or country before, but if you’ve already seen all there is to see, these alternative destinations are definitely worthy.

In Paris, most people seek to get a pic for Instagram at the famous Eiffel Tower. Because the tower is incredibly beautiful – and if it’s your first time in the City of Light, you should definitely see it. But if you have a lofty vision of a lover’s picnic of baguettes and wine as you watch the sun set together – well, you’re in for quite the surprise. The mood will quickly be killed by keychain vendors and hordes of other tourists expecting the same, quiet experience. Instead of the Eiffel Tower, head for the Sacre-Coeur Cathedral. Set quietly above Montmartre’s quaint neighborhood, this basilica is Paris‘ highest point. Tour the inside or climb atop the dome, where you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views of the entire region.

For those who’ve never been to New York City, Times Square is the obvious go-to choice. But, if what you’ve seen on TV hasn’t struck you – it really is that busy, all the time! And unless you want to put yourself in the midst of life-size cartoon characters and scammers telling you they know where the stars live, trade the bright lights of Times Square for a more laid back excursion to Bryant Park. It’s only a few blocks away, but it’s a whole other world. It borders the city’s Public Library, and locals use Bryant Park’s sprawling greenery as a meeting place. During the summer months, you’ll find outdoor concerts and movies, or games such as ping-pong, chess, putt-putt golf, and others. During the holiday season, the large green park becomes a winter village, complete with ice rink and artisanal markets.
