Arizona is one of those places that’s so varied in landscapes and things to do, it should be high atop your must-explore list. The Grand Canyon is located here, as are a host of other high-profile sites. But Monument Valley is certainly a close second in terms of awe-inspiring beauty.
Native American reservations make up nearly 25% of the state’s area, meaning many of the sites in Arizona are about celebrating the archaeology, history, and cultures of indigenous peoples.
This also means something else – the state is home to hundreds of museums and galleries, making the cities fun and family-friendly spots to explore. The nightlife is pretty amazing, too. It’s not a place you’ll soon forget.
For instance, consider Antelope Canyon. This mesmerizing winding cracks of the canyon are perfect for wandering as the sun snakes its way along the walls illuminating the red tones. There are two specific spots in Antelope Canyon that are must-see, and both have nicknames based on their features – The Crack & The Corkscrew.
While both of these parts are unique they do have something in common – the rock itself looks like its flowing – variations of reds all merging into each other, thanks to the beauty of erosion. Both the Crack and the Corkscrew are parts of Antelope Canyon within the Navajo Reservation Tribal Park, so you must join a guided tour to visit.
Another spot that should be in your plans is a stop off at historic Tombstone. It’s not just that this is where the OK Corral gunfight took place, but Tombstone was a boomtown at the height of its popularity. Rough places like this attracted the hardiest of prospectors and the toughest of gunslingers. Throw in the downright lawless coming in to seek their fortunes in Tombstone’s silver mines and you get the idea.
Is Tombstone a tourist trap nowadays? Sure. But it’s still very much a fun place to see while learning how America’s West became a settled region. The most famous part of Tombstone has been perfectly preserved so you can wander through the past’s saloons and even witness a re-enacted gunfight.
There’s a lot to see in Arizona. Ready for some historic fun?
