One of the best small towns in the South is in Alabama… at least, according to Southern Living Magazine. But both residents and visitors to the little town of Fairhope, Alabama, tend to agree.
This charming town on the coast of the Atlantic is just below Mobile on the map and laces the eastern shores of Mobile Bay. Its streets are lined with flowers. Every other street has a beautiful park. Through each park you’ll find designated walking trails. And at the other end, you’re sure to discover museums, galleries, chic boutiques, and some of the best seafood you’ve ever had in your life. Take a stroll along the birding trail and the views of Mobile Bay that greet you will let you know you’re in the right place — if you can catch that view at sunset, all the better.
But what may impress you most of all are all the lovely trees. Trees bigger than any you’ve likely seen before — California Redwoods, eat your heart out. The Crepe Myrtles and Long Leaf Pine trees are impressive, but the massively majestic Live Oaks and Southern Magnolias may just steal your heart. Some have trucks nearly 30 feet in circumference! The trees’ long limbs seem to support the other trees as they gracefully tickle the street below with limb spreads of over 200 feet. Just imagine — Fremont Street, but trees instead of a light show. These trees are over 100 years old, covered in moss, and shades of green you’ve got to see to appreciate.
Moving past the trees to find where all the locals hang out, you’ll discover Fairhope’s Municipal Park. It’s here where their nearly 1,450-foot pier juts out into the Atlantic. The fountain and rose gardens are just icing on this cake. Locals and visitors fish from these lengths, go for a stroll, take a rest on the benches, or grab a bite to eat.
It might be a small town, but it’s not weak on activities or things to do. Every year the town hosts multiple festivals.
These things make Fairhope, Alabama one of the best small towns in the South. Is it fair to hope we see you soon in Fairhope?
